Shelter project

we have been set our first and most likely only set project of the year.
Its on the theme of shelter.

and yet again like last year, its reli dificult to get inspired.

We have brainstormed and jotted down notes as a group and individualy, our big brainstorm has gone walkies n has dissapeared of the face of the earth, if someone has binned it then they owe us a brainstorm ¬_¬.

so we have  sat and discussed for horus what we can do, what inspires us and time is slowly running out.
After discussing with a fellow 2nd year who isnt part of our group it looks liek were not the only ones struggling, n have also realised a reocurring theme in all of the 2nd years work.

Useing the body as a metaphor for a shelter. which i am also leanig towards.

so considering we dont have much time left at all for this project now i think i better kick myself up the arse a little and get cracking.

ive looked into the work of Cindy Sherman and how she embodies different identitys.

i have other artists names suggested to me from class members.
but at the momant it sems to me that the approach is exactly the same for eveyone.

im curently lookin up definitions of shelter,
so far the work danger is poping up a lot, and one definition which i find quite intereesting is

something beneath, behind, or within which a person, animal, or thing is protected from storms, missiles, adverse conditions, etc.; refuge.

Ive logged onto diviantart and searched the word helter to se others approahes to the theme and to see if anythign can link towards what i have in mind.

This image by Violator 3 i find extrely dramatic simple yet perfect, relating to the way i wish to portray shelter using the body and featureing an anti shelter at the same time.

my main ideas is to take my body get rid of all the aspects of shelter from it, wipeing out my identity and how i portray my personality through my image, leavign me bare and vonerable, unsheltering me and creatign images that are almost distressing.

Naked by paint-dima, the photo of just her back is a suggestion of beign naked were as for all we know the woman could just be topless.

I liek the use of the landscape in the background it shows how the shelterof the body is in the open playing on the open space as well which is an unshelter of its own.

maybe the contrast of 2 is also an idea, for example i could create a situation were a person is dressed for the wrong type of shelter.

got lots of images and ideas to throw about i best get on now i guess got just over a week left to get some results.

Shrink- experience of a life time

BBC north west tonight (featureing 3 student from my course)

Lauren Malstaf's Shrink wrap.

bretahtakeing perforamances from 6 voleteers being shrink wrapped and 6 more watching there partners everymove in the bag liek there lives and others depended on it.
3 student from my course were ttrusted withteh taste to watch as tehre partners could potentialy suffocate.

the performance was beautifuly dangerous, the possitions held were peotic and dramatic,.
here one fo the volenteers tell us how he felt like he was makeing a big mistake until he was shown the beauty of the shrink and the medative state.
ive taken pages upon pages of notes of his other inventions and performances and will type them up along with images at a later date.

this exibition made me speechless.

the exhibition is an interactive audience based show.

without the audience it wouldnt have any content.

it takes your finger prints, voice,items, questions, heart beat, shadow, and your image.

so isnt this exhibit a bit personal, well i think so, its drawing us in and each of us are willing to give our identity to see it exhibited and become part of a whole.

Its very playful and also is a lot o fun hurs of endless entertainment.

Cube gallery AND festival

the exhibiton was confusing, a bit mental and a lil crazy.
but its art so its oki haha.

2 pieces in the cube were interesting to me.
one piece was a machine that read phantom nerves. people who have amputated limbs still have pahntom feelings as thought he limb is still there.
it was interestin to look at and made me wonder if it actualy worked.

also there was a vidio/ debate.
the menstration machine. a debate on why woman still have periods when they are obselite, the pill takes them away so why are wwe still haveing them.
the vidio showed a transvestite man experience a period useing the  menstration machine.
very very weird.

Manchester museum conference.. (the online musum)

i was lucky enough to get invited from oldham gallery to attend a confereence day.

my day started off with a private tour of the gallery, learning that the number 3 is a reacuring number throughout the galelry.

3 floors
ect

is this coincidental as painters and artists use the ruel of 3rds in there work.
hmm?
lots of 3's

anyway...

i also attended a lecture with Vaughen Allenn who was in charge of Urbis, he talked about the new generation of the gallery and how to adjust to the new era of viewing.
 he mentioned that the museum is becoming an online sensation now, "the viewer does not want to move from there seats but still view the museums content"
He mentioned such online newtworks as FlickR and Twitter.
I was suprised as to how much Twitter was mentioned and in some speaches were encouraged to tweet there every desicion or move.
Is it realy getting to the point were once something is technologicly documented it become obselite? where a simple photograph has taken everything that a historical object or thing has to embody?
pretty soon the objects themselves will become a mere fragment meaning nothing, when replicas, photographs and online networking groups can provide you with a 3D identicle image themselves.

He asked the question do we need a building? and who i the audience?

He mentioned each year 42 million visited uk museums and gallerys. so the figures show that there is still interest in soaking up a bit of culture.

he mentioned customer service in art, its all very well haveing your work up and a blurb on the wall, but when we come to questioningthe art work who do we ask, the ividulator, who can only tell us so much. He mentioned about the main staff of the galelry talking to the visiors explaining everything and answering anything.

It was food for thought, and a good start to an interesting insight into gallery work.

The next lecture was a bit boreing, and i could barely understand what they were taling about.

they asked what is co creation.

a man on my table who was te curator of the london veichal musum (i think) said "why have they changed it to co-creation instead of the usual co-curation"

sorry londonmuseum man, but i aitn got a clue what your talking about.

I have got lots of leaflets and booklets which im sure would made good readng material for the day i could understand what tehre talkign about haha.

but what is handy is i managed to get hold of a directory of museums and the names and job titles of the people who were running the conference =].

6/10/10 - Uni party

This year due to free for arts festival i didnt have much input at the party and only shown my face abnout 3 hours after the fist years had started puttign things together.

Being the only second yaer in our group available to help out i payed a visit and helped hem out as much as i could but leaving them to there own ideas.

this years party didnt have as much atmosphere as it did the year before, and there was les than half the people that showed up the year before hand.
which was ashame reali.
i had a little chat wth a fellow second year and we agreed that this year ther wasnt much atmophere or effort.
which was a pity.
I was a bit bored.
we were given the theme of a party with no guests....
Not the best theme in the world, it wasnt insiring enough to motivate us and teh 1st years.
so what we di was make it look liek the wildest party ever had gone on and then we clingfilmed the door shut so no guests could attend it.
(but 1st years decided to destroy our door and go in anyway)
which was a bit of a kick int he teeth after all the hard work of trying to get the cling film to cover the door space.

The first years dont seem to have a lot of enthusiasm i think it was probly because they may have been shy or something.
bu they did a good job on there own which im happy for them.

after takeing some photos and seeing everyones work i called it a day.
